The Russians claim this to be a pricing dispute, but its tactics are aimed at punishing Ukrainians for exercising their independence by having a real democracy, a real economy, by joining the World Trade Organization and by preparing to join NATO."

"When Ukraine became free
Brian Mulroney, National Post
Published: Thursday, April 26, 2007
In 1991, Brian Mulroney became the first leader of a G7 nation to recognize an independent Ukraine. At an Ottawa ceremony last week, the government of Ukraine awarded Mr. Mulroney the Order of King Yaroslav, its highest honour for foreigners. The Post is publishing an excerpt from Mr. Mulroney's acceptance speech.
We are all boat people. And we all dream of great things for our children. My parents, Ben Mulroney and Irene O'Shea, were Irish, but definitely not lacecurtain. In Baie-Comeau, a company town carved from the forest, they raised six children in a tiny home and took in boarders. My father carried a lunch pail all his life so his children wouldn't have to. He often said to me: The only way out of a paper mill town is through a university door.
Our forebears came here -- the Serbs, the Irish, the Ukrainians, the British, the French, even the Inuit -- against the elements and against the odds."
