GIORGIO ARMANI may have been in the business for 20 years, but he still isn't set in his ways. Although his 80-plus look collections are tempting from beginning to end, it seems the legenday designer will agree to tone it down a little. "I want to fine-tune the organisation behind the company," he says. "I offer too many choices, and variations of the same outfit. I must focus and edit, offering narrower guidelines. Also, I want to work on a different timing of deliveries, increasingly more frequent, with new products in the stores in 20 days." In Tokyo today, the designer will be joined by Cate Blanchett as he unveils a 65,000 square-foot flagship store in the district of Ginza - offical launch celebrations will feature a fashion show and a live performance by Black Eyed Peas star Fergie tomorrow evening. Armani believes taking his label to Japan is a great starting point for changes in the way he works. "I had sort of neglected Japan because it was not giving me any trouble," the designer tells WWD. "That, however, is exactly when we need to take action, because markets change quickly, competition sneaks in and we must be prepared to fight it with new and different means. In Tokyo, people are still very sensitive to fashion and free from any conditioning.
